For the 10th time in his 13-year professional career, Tiger Woods has been selected Player of the Year by the Golf Writers Association of America, it was announced Thursday. He received 84 percent of the 2009 vote while Steve Stricker garnered 10 percent and Y.E. Yang 6.
Woods won seven times worldwide in 2009, securing a PGA Tour-best six victories. He also paced the circuit with 14 top-10 finishes in 17 starts and won his second FedExCup.
Jiyai Shin of the LPGA Tour and Loren Roberts of the Champions Tour were also named Player of the Year by the GWAA. Shin collected three victories and earned LPGA Rookie of the Year honors. Roberts, a three-time winner, won the Senior Open Championship and the Charles Schwab Cup for the second time in three years.
The GWAA was founded in 1946 and helps protect the interests of all golf journalists. Winners will be honored at the association's annual awards dinner on April 7, 2010, in Augusta, Ga.
